The Night Is Young
THE NIGHT IS YOUNG

(Romance | Musical | Drama)
[1 hour 21 minutes]

Austrian Emperor Franz Josef has arranged a marriage for his nephew,
the Archduke Paul Gustave - nicknamed Gustl - to the suitable Princess
Matilda, a woman Gustl can't even remember. He is instead in love with
the Hungarian Countess Zarika Rafay, which Gustl can't tell his uncle
since he disapproves of her family. The Emperor will allow Gustl to
sow his wild oats before getting married, but that woman needs to be
someone "harmless" outside of the royal circle. Since they discuss
this situation while at the ballet, Gustl instead tells the Emperor
that he is in love with one of the ballerinas, and the one he has
chosen somewhat at random is the always distracted Lisl Gluck, who
is considered the worst dancer in the company since she is always
staring at the man she intends to marry, the ballet company's piano
accompanist Toni Berngruber. When Gustl summons Lisl, she is relieved
to learn his true intentions - that she is just a front while he cavorts
secretly with the Countess (although he tells her nothing of his
impending marriage to the Princess) - but less so when she learns that
that requires her to live in his royal house. She agrees when Gustl
promises to produce Toni's ballet in return. Although Toni knows nothing
about the agreement between Lisl and Gustl, Lisl running off with Gustl
does not sit well with him, who believes he can get any woman to replace
Lisl. As Lisl and Gustl live their separate lives together, they find
they have a fun time together, the other being different than those in
their own social class. But an incident between Lisl, Toni and Gustl
shows Lisl where her true feeling lie, those which were evident to Gustl
much earlier. But can a union of an Archduke and a not so good ballerina
work, let alone be sanctioned by the royal house?

George Whites 1935 Scandals
GEORGE WHITE'S 1935 SCANDALS

(Comedy | Musical | Romance)
[1 hour 24 minutes]

A vacationing Broadway producer, George White, stops off in a
small Georgia town to send a telegram. He sees his name in
lights on a local theater and is scandalized over the unauthorized
use. He goes to the theater to object and, while there, discovers
some unusual and great song-and-dance talent buried in a tank-town.
He takes them to New York City, puts them in a new version of his
Scandals and they are big hits. Their sudden fame causes a pair of
lovers to forget their vows made in less-palmy days.

find Al work, she teams him up with talented Dorothy for a
club date in Chicago. Flush with another success, Al wants
to open his own club on Broadway, so he borrows money from a

Broadway Melody of 1936
BROADWAY MELODY OF 1936

(Musical | Romance)
[1 hour 41 minutes]

The film opens with a radio broadcast where Harry Stockwell (himself)
sings an excerpt of "Broadway Melody," which had been introduced in
the first film of the Broadway Melody series, followed by Frances
Langford (herself) crooning "You Are My Lucky Star," one of this film's
most famous songs. When her vocal concludes, Bert Keeler (Jack Benny),
an obnoxious gossip columnist from the World Tribune, presents his
column radio-style, but all he talks about is who is having a baby.
Back at the newspaper office, his editor forbids any more writing
about babies and tells him to dig up some dirt or else. In his office,
Keelers assistant, Snoop (Sid Silvers), sees theatrical producer, Bob
Gordon (Robert Taylor), dancing with the wealthy widow, Lillian Brent
(June Knight), on a rooftop across the street. She offers to finance
Gordons new show and appeals to him to not forget about her while he
works on his show. That leads into the song "I've Got a Feeling You're Fooling"
sung by Bob and Lillian (later at an audition for Bobs show, Frances Langford
sings a short reprise of the song). During their rendition, flowers, furniture,
a piano, and a table complete with a meal, magically pop out of the floor.
A girls chorus sings and watches Basil (Nick Long, Jr.), Bobs assistant, tap.
He magically makes the white clad girls disappear and replaces them with the
same group of girls dressed in black. Basil performs a very acrobatic dance
before he dances with Lillian. The girls chorus sings again as the number
ends with Lillian and Bob at the bar. As the film ends, Keeler calls his
story into the newspaper; the snoring man appears one last time, and Bob
and Irene kiss.

Dick is watching the fleet come in when he sees June.
Dick has no intention of joining the Navy, which is a family tradition,
and June, having lost her father and brother in the Navy, does not want
a Navy man. But Dick relents when his father says that he would not make
it anyway and he enters the Naval Academy. The first year as a plebe is
tough, but Dick is at the head of his class. He rooms alone, as he sees
no need for friends as he plans to resign when he graduates. June has
also changed her mind about Dick being at the Academy. The second year
is the same, except for his old roommate Lawrence who washes out.
Finally, the last year and he has a three month training cruise.
This cruise will make or break Dick as a Navy man.

the final bow when he meets Jan, the singing porter. He sees
something in Jan so he signs him to a contract. Al works odd
jobs to pay for Jan's singing lessons and drops the idea of
Opera when he learns that it will take years. He has him
sing in a nightclub and from there it is up. But Jan soon
starts missing lessons and rehearsals and hits the bottle

(Comedy | Musical | Romance)
[1 hour 18 minutes]

Millionaire shipbuilder Freddie Gates decides to publicize his
ships by hiring Jack Hylton and his orchestra to broadcast from
his yacht. Brian Gates, Freddie's son, has a low-approval-rating
and a high dislike for jazz music and refuses to board the ship
with the band on board. His father enters a conspiracy with singer
Dorothy Drew to get him on the yacht, where the broadcasts will be
made. Brian falls in love with Dorothy, but calls off the romance
when he sees her dancing and singing with Hylton's band in Paris.
Dorothy induces three members of the band to shanghai Brian when
the yacht sails. A rival shipowner, determined to stop the
broadcasts, bribes the crew to desert the ship and all hands are
left stranded in mid-ocean on the yacht. The band-members manage
to extricate them from their predicament and they get back to
London, where Hylton is acclaimed and Brian marries Dorothy.
